Togthr ("we", "us", or "our") is a Chrome extension that enables real-time synchronized video watching across streaming platforms. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use the Togthr extension and related services.
At a glance: Togthr processes account, room, chat, and playback data to provide shared watching. Signed-in users have watch history and statistics. Recent chat messages are retained while a room is active to support participants and reconnections. Our website also uses Google Analytics, and paid subscriptions use Stripe.
1. Information We Collect
Account Information
When you sign in, we obtain your account information, including email address and display name, through our authentication provider (Clerk). Sign-in enables room creation and account features such as friends, history, and subscriptions. Guests can join rooms that permit them. We also store a profile with your username, a unique friend code, and preferences.
Username
You choose a username that is displayed to other participants in the room. This is stored locally on your device and, for signed-in users, on our servers as part of your profile.
Chat Messages
Messages you send in the Togthr chat sidebar are transmitted to other room participants via WebSocket. The room server retains recent messages and pinned-message state for the active room, including reconnections. These messages are not part of the watch-history record described below. Room data is cleaned up through the room's teardown process after participants leave.
Session Data
During a watch session, we process the following data to enable synchronization:
- Video playback state (play, pause, seek position)
- Room membership (who is in the room)
- The streaming platform being used (e.g., "Netflix", "YouTube")
Room state, participant information, and synchronization data are processed in memory and persisted in Cloudflare Durable Objects so a room can recover after an idle period or server restart. Cleanup runs after the room becomes empty; selected session information is retained as watch history.
Watch History
If you have an account, we keep a lightweight record of your past sessions so you can look back at what you watched together. This includes the streaming platform, content title, session duration, and the usernames of participants. We also keep simple stats like your total number of sessions and total watch time.
Friends & Presence
Togthr has an optional friends feature. When you add someone as a friend (using friend codes), you can see each other's online status — for example, whether a friend is currently in a watch room or browsing a supported streaming site. Presence can include the platform and detected content title. Browsing-presence records have a 120-second expiration, refreshed while activity is reported. You can stop new browsing-presence reports by enabling "Hide browsing activity" in the extension settings. This setting does not hide your participation in a watch room.
Subscriptions and Website Analytics
For paid plans, Stripe handles checkout and payment details. Togthr stores subscription identifiers, plan, billing status, and billing dates needed to manage access. The website loads Google Analytics to measure website use; this can involve cookies and browser or device information. These website analytics are separate from the extension's playback synchronization.
2. Information We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect your general browsing history — we only know about streaming sites when the extension is active
- We do not record video or audio content
- We do not access your streaming account credentials
- Togthr does not receive full card details from Stripe-hosted checkout
3. How We Use Your Information
We process data for the following features and website operations:
- Authentication cookies: To maintain your login session via Clerk
- Username & profile: To identify you in watch rooms and let friends find you via friend codes
- Chat messages: To deliver messages to room participants in real time
- Playback state: To synchronize video across all room members
- Platform detection: To inject the correct sync engine for each streaming site
- Watch history: To let you see your past sessions and watch stats
- Presence: To show your friends whether you're online and available to watch together
- Billing: To manage subscriptions and paid-plan access
- Website analytics: To understand use of our website
4. Data Storage
Local Storage
The extension stores the following data locally on your device using Chrome's storage API:
- Your chosen username
- Authentication tokens (for signed-in users)
- Last used room code (for convenience)
- Your preferences (e.g., whether browsing activity is hidden)
Server-Side
Our servers (api.togthr.tv) handle both real-time and persistent data:
- Room state (playback position, participant information, and recent chat) is processed by the room server, with state persisted in Durable Objects for recovery. Room teardown cleans up temporary room data.
- User profiles (username, friend code, preferences) are stored persistently for signed-in users.
- Watch history (platform, content title, duration, participants) is stored persistently so you can review past sessions.
- Friend lists and friend requests are stored persistently.
- Browsing presence is stored with a 120-second expiration refreshed by new reports.
- Subscription records identify your plan and billing status; payment details are handled by Stripe.
We do not store the video or audio you watch. Temporary room data and persistent account/session records have different purposes; watch history does not contain chat transcripts.
5. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services:
- Clerk (clerk.com) — Authentication provider. Handles sign-in and session management. Subject to Clerk's Privacy Policy.
- Cloudflare — Hosts our API, Durable Objects, and stored application records.
- Stripe — Handles checkout, payments, and subscription billing. Subject to Stripe's Privacy Policy.
- Google Analytics — Measures website usage. Subject to Google's Privacy Policy.
- KLIPY (klipy.co) — GIF and sticker search. Search terms are sent to KLIPY's API through our service, and displaying media can connect your browser to media providers. Subject to KLIPY's Privacy Policy.
These providers process data needed to operate the features described above. Your streaming provider also receives your independent streaming requests.
6. Extension Permissions
Togthr requests the following Chrome permissions, each used solely for its stated purpose:
- activeTab: To detect the current streaming platform and inject sync controls
- cookies: To read authentication cookies from togthr.tv for user sessions
- storage: To persist your username, auth tokens, and preferences locally
- tabs: To detect URL changes during single-page app navigation on streaming sites
- offscreen: To securely manage authentication tokens in the background via the Clerk SDK
- alarms: To schedule extension background maintenance
- Host permissions (streaming sites): To inject the video sync engine and chat sidebar into supported platforms
7. Data Security
Production connections to our API use HTTPS and WSS. The extension uses the browser's extension storage for local settings and session data. Access is governed by browser extension permissions; this storage is not a separate encrypted password vault.
8. Children's Privacy
Togthr is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
